Despite it, ostensibly, being a collection of poetry, I found myself connecting the poems into a story. As with any revue, take this for what it's worth; my tastes tend to run from high to low brow and back again very quickly.

I'm fairly certain that Johnny here has psychopathic tendencies. Much of these poems deal with ridiculous amounts of violence, either against girls who hurt him or complete strangers, all with an overall tone of indifference.

The rest of the poems convey a sense of being lost in life while doing every self destructive thing he could think of: drugs, violence, sex Lot of blood, lot of drugs.

Easy to read. You don't have to spend too much time or any dissecting each poem. This is all pretty ironic because one of his poems talks about how it takes him weeks just to get one draft done, but his style makes it look like he pumped it out in 10 minutes.

It's very raw, very unpolished. I can appreciate that, especially since you don't really expect poetry to be written that way. But for me it was too unpolished.

Combined with an overall tone of indifference, it was hard for me to get all that into. That doesn't make this collection of poems bad or that I didn't like it.

I feel like it's probably an acquired taste or something like that. Funny enough, I stumbled upon the author's tumblr page and bought this book because he was advertising that it was on sale.

I commented on that post that I bought it and he sent me a message thanking me and that I'll have to let him know what I think.

I have another one of his poem collections that I definitely will be reading here soon. Regardless of what I think of the writing itself, this guy's definitely got some stories to tell and I fully believe in supporting indie authors.

So keep it up, Johnny. Like all excellent artists, Johnny Scarlotti doesn't care if we're discomfitted by his art.

He's bold, brazen at times, tender and poignant, heart-wrenchingly so, at others. And, sometimes, he's frightening, horrifyingly macabre.

What he does, excruciatingly well, is elicit response from the audience. One could argue, at the end of the day, that it's this that defines art and this alone.

Does it make us feel, elicit emotion, any emotion whatsoever? If so, the artist's job is done. It doesn't matter, ultimately, if we like the work, love it, are saddened by it, even loathe it; what matters is that our response is strong, visceral, intense, that we have a response.

Scarlotti evokes this, even when, perhaps especially when, it's uncomfortable, when he's saying things we wish to draw away from, things that are terrifying, melancholy, visceral hard-edged reality for many - too many.

The truths he writes about drug addiction, forced indoctrination, and homelessness, for instance, aren't comfortable or desirable nor are those he writes about the hopelessness of losing hope, facing despair.

And, certainly, what he writes about serial killers is macabre in the extreme yet becomes a social commentary on so-called civilization's hypocrisy.

No, Johnny doesn't write easy poetry oft-times; he writes poetry that challenges, shifts paradigms, makes one ponder and think.

He also writes poetry that simply makes us feel. This collection is unexpected: brash and bold at times, discomfitting and morose, serious and poignant, sexy and humorous too.

Scarlotti runs the gamut. If you're looking for politically correct family-friendly material, don't read this book, watch Martha Stewart.

But if you enjoy a copious turn of mind and appreciate defiant art that pushes the envelope on wry humor, dark metaphors and nuanced ironies, this book is bound to suit your palate.

Semper Fi, Jack Tex August 07, Nov 10, Rodney rated it really liked it. Darkly humorous with clever wordplay. I really enjoyed the style of this.

The witty use of homonyms and the quick punchy lines kept it rolling nicely. Sep 10, Ted Prokash rated it really liked it. Good title.

I'd like to see a sequel with a comma between the two words, and then a third book with the comma and quotes around the title.

Or there might already be more books in this series. Scarlotti has me interested enough to find out. Oh, a review, a review.

I don't know, I don't necessarily get all the rape and gore and whatnot. I suppose it's an expression of something.

You know, Bukowski's childhood boils and cruel father made him write poems about pulling women Good title.

You know, Bukowski's childhood boils and cruel father made him write poems about pulling women's hair, etc. Also Scarlotti seems to endorse Marilyn Manson.

You might disagree with him, or want to call B. That's the mark of character, integrity. And that's something. Don't read if you can't stand the thought of playing hacky sack with a murdered hooker's liver or snorting blow through a dead hobo's urethra, for example.

If you were a fan of American Psycho then you'll enjoy this new vision of that book in poem form. I always assume that poets always write from their personal experiences, so why the hell have the police not caught up with Johnny yet?

I soon found out in one of the poems that he has been feeding them, talk about hiding in plain sight. This is my favourite line in the book Report abuse.

Just no. As the title suggests, this is all but unreadable. Honestly I could write a long review detailing just how appalling this collection is, but I have already wasted enough of my time unfriending the person who recommended it.

So keep it up, Johnny. Nov 21, Simon P rated it really liked it. Not for the easily-queasy, this is a fine first collection of horror-core poetry.

Johnny has written a collection of poetry with a theme. That theme is an over-the-top violent take on young-person angst, different from a lot of poetry because it is psychotic, not neurotic.

Some of the poems in this book seem childish, unpolished, some plain disgusting and stupid, but there are also some real gems that feature deviant, gruesome, biker-bar wordplay, genuine emotion, Bukowski and Pat Bateman unreality, and easy enjoyment.

I'm giving this a four-star rating because poetry collections for me are mostly inconsistent, but some of the poetry in here shines through with a brash fiction and facetious melodrama.

Plus it's quite fun to read such an unpretentious collection. Probably suited to young male readers, this won't be a good read for any number of demographics.

I might have liked fewer references to the protagonist's dick being thrust into things, and a little less blood oozing over everything.

But shit, we've all thought nasty shit like this, even if it made us wince and feel horrible about ourselves - this guy writes it down and puts it out there.

Believe me, you will find some shockingly disturbing stuff nestled in neatly with the bizarre, lustful and humorous--a combination that is rather reminiscent of Patrick Bateman in Ellis's "American Psycho".

The most graphic poem in this selection is undoubtedly " 37 August 11th, "--and buyer beware, because it is sure to twist all but the strongest stomachs.

However, this book isn't all blood and carnage. You'll find considerably lighter and funnier pieces here as well--and everything that falls in between both extremes.

The true genius of Scarlotti's poetic voice is that it's accessible to anyone. You won't find flowery sonnets here, but you will discover the light of truth and cogency shining through the darkness.

The poems are often as emotionally callous and senselessly violent and sexual as Patrick Bateman; simple and sad with the "all-seeing-eye-that-is-mostly-pointed-towards-the-inward-broken-self" charm of Bukowski, as we've already mentioned; and pulpy pulp-at-the-bottom-of-the-jug fiction.

If you like a little splatterpunk, a little alcohol in the evenings to flush your feelings down the drain, if you like unrefined deluges of borderline cartoonish outrage, then I think Fuck Utah would be a great bedside companion for you.

Special thanks to Johnny himself for offering a free copy of Fuck Utah before it even really hit the shelves. It was a pleasure.

Mar 20, Geoff Sturtevant rated it it was amazing. Richard Brautigan meets Patrick Bateman. I read this whole book with a grin on my face.

Not for the feint of heart, this is heavy-duty stuff. And you don't need to be a poetry-person to enjoy it. There's great novelty in the explicit sex and absurdist violence.

I was hooked after only a few pages. Not this guy. Scarl Richard Brautigan meets Patrick Bateman. Scarlotti's prose is plainspun, direct, and brutal; it stands under its own weight.

You'll have a ball reading this book, no question about it. Highly recommended. Sep 03, Hunter Farrell rated it it was amazing.

Quality writing. There is so much truth and mystery in this collection of expertly written poetry by Mr. Scarlotti that I'll be a fan for years to come!
